Drifting Deposits

16th February 2025

Another day of very poor visibility on the hill. We also had snow showers on strong winds with near constant drifting at higher elevations. The strong winds are keeping the snow moving across the hillsides but where it can stop, in the most sheltered locations, unstable windslab is forming and cornices are developing. Stability was poor in some locations and caution is required.

Mainly dry tomorrow but it is remaining cold and the rate of consolidation will be slow. If the visibility is as poor as today sensible route choice decisions will need to be made.

Very few photo opportunities presented themselves today but both Ochils and Braemar Mountain Rescue Teams were out training so I managed a couple of shots that weren’t entirely white!

Braemar MRT on a training day – with all the ‘toys’ out.

Braemar MRT use this machine to move equipment and people around the hills. Sometimes in poor visibility a ‘spotter’ is required up front.
