Bright, windy and snow showers

24th February 2025

A bright and windy day with the freezing level around to around 1000 metres. Isolated and sometimes heavy showers which fell as snow or sleet to around 900 metres.

The remaining older snow patches are mostly found on North-West  to North- East aspects above 900 metres. These deposits will become firmer and quite icy as the freezing level drops further overnight and into Tuesday. The runouts below the slopes remain serious and consequential.

Further snowfall is expected, this will begin to drift onto wind sheltered slopes and deposit shallow accumulations of windslab.

Nice to have a return to more wintery conditions.

Looking towards Black Spout on Lochnagar.

Red Spout on Lochnagar. Snow mostly confined to crag aprons and gully lines.

Main Coire of Lochnagar, ice now confined to the wind sheltered edge of the Lochan.

Old snow on the coire rim and a “dusting” of fresh snow amongst the rocks. More snow forecast will development of shallow windslab in these locations.

Linn of Muick, waterfall first thing this morning. The mountain burns were actually quite low level, the pulse of runoff having already made it way into the larger rivers.

I found an ice axe on Sunday just off the Lairig an Laouigh path about 500m N of the branch to the Hutchison hut on Saturday. Probably had been there a while as the head was lightly rust spotted. I have retrieved it and if you are aware of anyone who has lost such I can try and return it. I am in Aberdeen.
