Hazy shade of winter…
11th January 2025
Another cold day in the Southern Cairngorms with light Southerly winds – the midday summit temperatures on The Cairnwell were -3.0°C.. Despite the cloud it was quite bright with the sunshine threatening to break through. There were lots of people around the Glenshee ski area enjoying the winter sports and the sledging slope.
The snow pack remains much the same as the previous day. There are still weaknesses within the deeper accumulations and travel on foot was quite tiring.
Milder air is forecast to become dominant through tomorrow, with a lot of the unconsolidated snow on lower slopes thawing and diminishing.

Looking down on the Glenshee Ski Centre from Carn Aosda 915 metres. The sounds of happy skiers, boarders and sledges could be heard on the summit.

Carn an Turin 1019 metres. Some deep snow accumulations and some thin. Too much for easy travel on foot and not quite enough for travel on ski.

“Where are we?” A group of hill walkers huddle round a map, tricky navigation in the cloud away from linear features like ski lifts.

Thank you for spotting the typo, it is of course Carn an Tuirc. Spell check corrected it to the popular Italian city of Turin.

There’s also the somewhat smaller Turin Hill across Forfar way!
