Wet again

17th December 2024

Another wet and driech day in the Southern Cairngorms. The mountains were blanketed in cloud with persistent rain at all levels.

Despite the lack of visibility, it was evident that the remaining snow patches have further reduced in size and depth.

More rainfall at all levels is expected overnight with the freezing level dropping below the summits during the afternoon with some light potential snowfall. Snowfall amounts will be very minimal and will mostly fall onto bare ground but will be a welcome, but brief return to wintery conditions.

A wet summit of Glas Maol 1058 metres

Snow patches confined to terrain features such as coire rims, gullies and burn lines. This deposit was found North East of Glas Maol.

A good opportunity to practice some poor visibility navigation.

Views towards Carn an Turin 1019 metres. The white to green/brown ratio is approaching 5:95! A dusting of new snow expected tomorrow afternoon.
