Overnight Snow for the New Year

31st December 2024

Another volatile day of Scottish weather in the Southern Cairngorms! Overnight snow fell from glen level upwards late last night (judging by the remnants of snow on my car at 250 metres AMSL). The traffic cams on the snow roads gave a white picture in the early hours, but by dawn the rain had done its work clearing the snow from all but the highest elevations.

Colder conditions are expected tomorrow, with some snow during the day. Amounts are expected to be small, falling under high winds of variable direction. Correspondingly, any windslab deposits are expected to be shallow and avoidable, these being confined to coire rims. However, greater snow amounts are forecast for the Northern Cairngorms, so it is worth checking this forecast in addition to that of the Southern Cairngorms. Particularly, if you are planning on visiting the northern boundary of our area.

Happy New Year from the Southern Cairngorms.

Looking towards the summit of Glas Maol this morning. Some slushy wet snow is all that is remaining in the otherwise snow sure Coire Fionn.

Looking towards Being a’Bhuird and the South-West facing slopes of the Alltan na Beinne.

Some isolated snow patches in the central Cairngorms massif to the North of the River Dee.
