Damp today, wet tomorrow

16th December 2024

The overnight rain cleared during the early morning and gave a reasonably dry day on the mountains, with only occasional showers. Some brighter periods gave limited views across the Southern Cairngorm area. Gale force South-Westerly winds made progress on the plateau quite tiring especially near ridge lines.

The thaw has continued to reduce the snow cover which is now patchy with the great accumulations above 900 metres. Some deeper deposit have managed to survive, these are mostly confined to coire rims, gullies and burn lines.

The freezing level is forecast to remain above the summits again for Tuesday, potentially rising to around 2500 metres during the afternoon. Heavy rainfall is also forecast with Tuesday being quite wet and dreich.

Careful route planning will be required to avoid stream and burns that are likely to become swollen during the daytime.

Views South towards the Spittal of Glenshee, not much snow but dramatic winter light.

Not much water in the burn below Glenshee, most of the snowmelt and rain having all ready passed downstream. With significant rainfall forecast for Tuesday this and other burns are expected to become swollen.

Views East from Glas Maol. Deeper snow patches now confined to terrain features like burnlines and gullies.
