Post-Thaw Lochnagar.

13th March 2024

Much milder conditions overnight , a temperature of  +6 degrees at 900 metres was recorded with rain falling in strong Southerly winds.

However after the morning cloud cleared it was a much better day than I expected, other than the winds of course.

The cover at low levels has diminished but above 900 metres has held up well. Lochnagar still looks in reasonable condition although buttresses are a little blacker.

Snow cover has diminished in more open locations. Members of Braemar Mountain Rescue Team descending the Ladders footpath after an ascent of the Black Spout.

A number of small wet snow avalanches occurred overnight.
