Storm Jocelyn

23rd January 2024

Storm Jocelyn definitely made her presence felt today with blizzard conditions in the mountains. Fresh snowfall above 600 metres and extremely unpleasant mountain conditions at 900 metres. Severe gale force winds were stripping exposed locations leaving them firm and icy, and depositing unstable windslab in wind sheltered locations. Freezing level rising quickly from mid-afternoon onwards.

Overnight the winds will remain gale or severe gale force, easing by daylight to near gale force. There will be some overnight summit level snow, easing to a mainly dry day around daybreak. The weather situation remains unsettled for the next 48 hours with further frontal systems pushing through.

Extremely unpleasant conditions for photography today – and no viz onto the Lochnagar cliffs – so very limited offerings….

Severe gale force winds and snowfall made for difficult mountain conditions today.

Had two coats on Dog Bowie today and he’s still drying out.
