Broad Cairn

9th January 2024

We took a trip up Broad Cairn today to get some different views. Super cold in the glen this morning with a light covering of fresh snow from a passing shower during the previous evening. This has put a skim of snow over the water-ice on the footpaths – so beware of hidden hazards!

Almost windless in the glen and only a very light South-Easterly breeze at Munro level. Having spoken to my colleagues who are spread over the Highlands, South Cairngorms were the only ones with some summit cloud: They were all reporting blue skies. Nevertheless it was a beautiful day to be on the tops, and the mid-mountain views were great.

We have a few centimetres of soft snow on a firm base above 800 metres, so there are some reasonable ski trips to be had. It looks like it will once again be cloudier in the East tomorrow with the occasional light snow shower and brighter over in the West.

Calm early morning conditions on Loch Muick

Water-ice on Black Burn Bridge

Lean conditions on the Dubh Loch cliffs

Cloud on the summit of Broad Cairn

Mother & offspring

Light snowfall into the glen
