Bonus Snowfall

16th January 2024

There was always some uncertainty about how much snowfall we were going to receive – worst case scenario was no snow – best case 5-10cm. We received at least 20cm straight fall in Braemar this afternoon. Reports from the afternoon up at Glenshee Ski Centre was powder on a firm base – with some very enjoyable bonus runs being had.

Before the snow arrived there was mostly very firm snow-ice with crampons being used from fairly low altitudes and just a few locations where some moderately bonded snow existed. At present there will be a general soft covering but as the wind speed increases overnight and through tomorrow there will be some fairly significant redistribution taking place. Unstable windslab will rapidly build in wind sheltered locations and fragile cornices will form.

Photo options were almost non-existent today with very poor visibility. Hopefully with tomorrow’s better forecast we will be able to supply you with some updated views.

The White Room – very poor visibility today

Raised areas are scoured with softer snow in sheltered locations.

Shallow covering of snow at lower elevations. 700m
