Snow then thaw!

15th March 2023

We’re due a rapid cycle of redistribution, snowfall and then thaw as the wind picks up, moderate snowfall arrives and then the freezing level rises over the summits, all in a 12 hour window. Scottish weather at its best!

As todays photos show, there is a lot of snow at higher elevations in the main Cairngorms with some cornices present – Extra snowfall and then rising temperatures are going to create a complicated situation. Careful planning required.

Stability will improve later on in the day….

Full snow cover and some cornices on the higher mountains in the main Cairngorms.

Cloud starting to lower onto the summits during the morning.

Derry Cairngorm (1155m) from Carn Crom (890m)

Some bright weather first thing. Lowering cloud base later.
