Slow thaw

22nd January 2023

A slow but steady thaw is taking place now that the freezing level has moved over the summits. Much snow has been lost at lower levels but only the surface layers have softened at altitude with still plenty of colder drier snow in deeper accumulations. The visibility was awful today with the cold base down to around 500 metres – so we couldn’t see anything at altitude.

The thaw will continue on Monday and Tuesday with a return to cooler conditions on Wednesday.

Minimal photo opportunities today in the Zero Viz – hopefully things will improve tomorrow

A damp day with no visibility – The ‘Look’ says it all. Double jacket day for both of us!
