Lochnagar.

20th January 2023

It was a clear, dry and cold day out today.

Route of choice was the Glas Allt to the top of Lochnagar. A short but tough trail break, ski’s on at the top of the falls.

A good cover of snow above 700 metres, becoming firmer the higher you go.

Much milder tomorrow (Saturday) but with little precipitation hopefully it’ll be a very slow thaw.

Deep soft drifts up past the Glas Allt Shiel waterfalls this morning. Trail was a bit better coming down as the falls had a few visitors.

Skis on at the top of the fall. Snow cover improved with height.

A walker with their dog on the plateau. Understandably Lochnagar was busy. Good walking conditions on the firm snow.

Summit of Lochnagar with the Cairngorms in the background.

Looking across the crags. Rocks still visible on the crag apron with deeper deposits in places.

Not the best of pictures. Dog Rogue above Right Hand Black Spout. Currently a tricky exit with cornices around the top. In Saturdays thaw, they will either slump or collapse.
