Broad Cairn

28th January 2023

Cracking day today with good visibility and light to moderate winds on the summits. Lots of people out and about making the most of the fine weather. The old snow is seriously firm with icy surface layers. This makes life quite awkward where the cover is patchy as you end up taking your crampons on and off  – or just leaving them on through the bare bits! Even the rocks were covered in verglas at summit level. The consequence of a slide at the moment is serious as there are so many rocks showing through to abruptly arrest your fall….

Not so pleasant tomorrow with light rain and stronger winds forecast. The freezing level is going to briefly climb up and over the summits before rapidly lowering back down to 800 metres.
