Thaw Forecast

18th December 2022

Quite a strong wind at higher elevations today, with redistribution of deposits occurring. Travel on foot remained problematic with knee and occasionally thigh deep drifts encountered at relatively modest altitudes.

All change tonight and tomorrow with very mild conditions arriving. Rain has also been forecast which will increase the loading on the snowpack. Without doubt destabilisation will take place and we are expecting to see avalanche debris on Monday. Take care out there and take into consideration what is above you as well as what is underfoot.

Snow being stripped off SE aspects onto NW aspects on Carn an Tuirc today.

Looking over the ski slopes to Glas Maol.

The transition from shallow to deep snow is rapid at present.
