Diminishing Snow Cover

16th April 2022

A week of mild weather has completely changed the landscape with a lot of snow having melted since last weekend. It was another mild day today but the low cloud and strong wind didn’t make it feel particularly warm. The snow is fairly soft at the edges of the snow fields or where the patches are small and shallow but the larger areas only have softer surface layers and then quickly firm up after the first few centimetres.

The forecast is for more of the same tomorrow with mild, dry and fairly windy conditions but then it looks like the freezing level might be lowering slightly next week.

The two photos below were taken six days apart – just to give you an idea of how much snow has disappeared this week…

Exactly the same location on 16th April 2022

Larger areas remain in high North to East facing corries.

Very little snow below 900 metres.

Cloudy conditions today with the cloud base variable around 700 to 800 metres at times.
