Lochnagar

8th May 2021

The current area specific avalanche forecasting provision will finish today with a report being issued for Sunday 9th May. It is expected that summit temperatures will rise from Sunday and snow cover depletion is expected.  The SAIS will however continue to monitor weather forecasts with any necessary statements being made via the website – www.sais.gov.uk

It was very definitely winter in Lochnagar today  – although the cloud refused to budge from the main cliff to give me a decent photo opportunity. With strong May sunlight, it is noticeable that the cliffs which catch the sun are black but those facing North are most definitely not.

The forecast is for milder weather from tomorrow, so we are expecting the snow to start thawing fairly quickly, especially at lower levels. This is probably going to be one of those years where some snow patches survive right through the Summer though in shady locations.

Cloud refusing to budge from the main cliffs. SE facing West Buttress has been catching the sun.

Still very snowy in the Southern sector

Evidence of small scale surface instabilities (if you look closely!)

Small cornices present

Not bad for May!
