Lochnagar post thaw

19th December 2018

Visibility was generally poor today with the cloud level around 950 metres.

Headed up the West Ridge and was pleasantly surprised how much snow and ice has survived the thaw. Above 950 metres the snow was very hard and it is likely to become very icy with a further drop in the freezing level.

Looking towards Culdaroch (900m). There was only ever superficial cover on these aspects.

A surprising amount of snow and ice has survived yesterdays heavy rain. Although running with water there is ice in the False/hidden Corrie. A good sign for higher Corries.

The West Ridge. There was little visibility higher up.

Told you! Looking across the plateau towards the summit. There is still good cover which it is very hard and required crampons on steeper ground.
