Its still Winter!

30th March 2018

Its definitely still winter, today felt like a classic February day, cold, windy and lots of snow blowing around.

It has been steadily snowing down to the glens for the last 20 hours or so. Initially the snow fell as graupel (looks like a hard icy ball if you don’t know it), his layer was then covered in more falling and drifting snow. A surprisingly thick layer, when I exposed this layer it started pouring out like water, obviously these areas are pretty unstable!

Generally these areas are restricted to corrie rims and gully exits, some careful route choices required.

Sorry, poor pictures today, bit wild for anything decent!

Shooting cracks disappearing across a slope. Tactical withdrawal from here!

The culprit! A layer of Graupel had been buried overnight. This layer easily failed when tested.

A video (as best I could do).
