Snowing & Blowing

24th December 2016

The A93 was closed this morning and remained so all day due to strong winds drifting deposits across the road, giving zero visibility during the stronger gusts. The same strong winds were scouring the windward slopes leaving them bare with very little snow cover. However in sheltered locations the persistent drifting has formed deep new accumulations with trail breaking in knee deep snow required. New windslab accumulations well in excess of one metre are present in very sheltered locations. Operating in these locations today was extremely difficult due to the volume of drifting occurring. The freezing level is going to soar well over the summits on the 25th, so please read the avalanche hazard forecast if you are spending Christmas Day in the mountains. The Southern Cairngorms Team wish you a happy Christmas however you decide to spend it!
