Persistent drifting
6th February 2016
After a mostly dry start, snowfall arrived late morning and continued into the afternoon. In most areas this new snow is of insignificant depth but in sheltered locations drifted deposits were blowing in continuously. The shot below was taken at 12.30hrs at 950m on a NE aspect and shows 35-40cm of new windslab on top of the old snow. The ruler was cleared for the photograph and drifted in immediately.
30 centimetres of foot penetration was easily achieved in the new snow with cracking and blocks breaking away underfoot⦠Very similar conditions forecast so depth and distribution of windslab will increase.
