Localised windslab
20th February 2015
Generally there is just a trace of new snow on open terrain, however redistribution has accumulated windslab in sheltered locations. You can literally step from firm snow-ice on to 30-40 cm of windslab by dropping into the top of a gully or over a corrie rim. Distribution is limited and unfortunately you may find yourself climbing the majority of a gully on snow-ice to be blocked by windslab in the last 2-3 metres of the gully. Don’t be fooled though, this cold dry snow is poorly bonded to the snow-ice beneath.
