Lochnagar but no viz!

9th March 2013

Went into Lochnagar again today to see how much new snow was in there, but walked into the cloud on the lower track at 600 metres. Although the cloud base was gradually creeping back up the hillside there was no visibility on the way in.

The rime on the rocks pointed me in the right direction for finding the fresh snow though. These beautiful feathery formations form on the windward side of an object, letting me know where the wind has been coming from, and thus where the snow has been blown to.

Only occasional snow showers in the weather forecast for the next 24 hours but it is going to be bitterly cold with -6 at 900m and -8 at 1200m forecast. The cold, dry snow will continue to drift in those conditions so careful route choice recommended.
