The sky that keeps on giving!

6th February 2009

The weather forecasters do struggle to accurately forecast amounts of snow due, particularly in these complex weather fronts. We had a reasonable dollop today (none forecast) which pushed us back into 3+ territory. Some obvious consolidation in places. Have tried to visit same areas in these snowy times, we’ve had up to 2 metres of snow in these locations this week.
Thoughts this weekend?
Ski touring, you can tour from the roadside, forest tracks are full, but on the hills it’s very changeable out there, very deep in places (I struggled on ski’s yesterday in places), Be wary of the ice! It’s rock hard!! Skin’s will struggle for grip and sharp edges the way forward. I watched 2 folks take 30 min for about 100 metres today, struggling with ice, poor route choice!
Climbing/Mountaineering. I believe the Glen Muick road ploughed but can’t get it confirmed. It will be a flog wherever you walk to but Lochnagar will have options, the winds have mostly been blowing into the Corrie. There will be plenty dubious snow in there as well, careful route choice.
Whatever you do have a great weekend!

Pic: 10am this morning and the main car park full at Glenshee. The skiing is very good, I imagine it’ll be very busy this weekend. If you’ve not skied there before there’s a lot to go at but, like all the resorts be prepared to queue.
