Drifting Deposits

6th January 2009

Windslab over a very firm snow-ice base produced shooting cracks under single load body weight today. Many areas still have very little or old firm snow but at higher elevations the stronger winds were shifting recent deposits around. Sheltered locations such as gully exits are now holding unstable windslab.
A reliable source from Grampian Police Mountain Rescue Team who was in Lochnagar first thing this morning reported windslab and also spindrift coming off the top of the crags. Later on they confirmed avalanche debris out of Raeburn’s Gully and observed a small avalanche coming down Parallel A. There are plenty of places you can still go to but keep your clever heads on for the next 24 hours…
