Thaw slightly delayed

22nd January 2008

It has remained cold all day today with some light drifting occuring onto North aspects. The thaw we were expecting today is on its way and temperatures are starting to rise and will go above the summits tonight. Moderate rain and an 1800 metre freezing level will soften the surface layers. There is also the possibility of some cornice collapse overnight.
The freezing level will lower to 1300 metres tomorrow morning with plus 3 centigrade given for midday at 1000 metres. We are expecting it to lower further later on in the afternoon, so this isn’t going to be a devastating thaw and will hopefully help improve the climbing conditions. Sorry skiers the snow will eventually become a little firm for skiing but tomorrow should be okay.
