Limited new snow

15th January 2008

Sorry folks – only limited snowfall today. It looks like the weather system tracked further south. It is colder though and the old snow is starting to refreeze, with the shallow snow firming up quite nicely. The deeper accumulations are something else – there is a breakable crust with softer wet snow beneath. The cover is quite broken but there are large areas of deep snow still around.
The forecast is to remain cold with the occasional snow shower and stronger winds. With minus 5 centigrade forecast for 1000 metres the old snow will continue to firm up and the climbing will improve with it.
Low cloud today so no photos – there’s only so many pictures of a snowpit you can look at!

Sam
