Sunshine and Snow Showers

9th April 2022

Well it definitely feels like April weather – lots of showers – they just happen to be snow showers. Actually if I were to be accurate – a lot of the precipitation that is coming down is graupel. There are some well defined layers around the top of the snowpack that are pure graupel – behaving as graupel does – ball bearing-like, allowing layers to slide very easily. Luckily at present these are not buried within the pack and we will be keeping a close eye on them.

I thought that I would get an early start this morning to try and take advantage of the better weather first thing – Unfortunately that meant that I got to trail break – and I think that I managed to find every snow covered culvert on the path. So if you are going somewhere that isn’t popular – take a mate or two to share the trail breaking – or find a wind exposed slope!

We should hang onto the new snow for the next couple of days but Tuesday looks like it is going to be quite a bit milder.
