A beautiful winters day.

11th February 2019

It was a very cold night with only a dusting of new snow. The snow cover is generally very firm and above 900 metres crampons were very useful, bordering on essential for anything steep.

However, that is likely to change with thaw conditions forecast over the next couple of days.

A lovely start to the day, Lochnagar from the roadside.

Great views across to the main Cairngorms. Cairn Toul and Braeriach.

Raised footprints on the Glas Maol plateau. Surface hoar forming on the surface in the cold and calm conditions.

Ben MacDui and Corrie Sputan Dearg.

A post with rime build up on both sides.

Two walkers above the Garbh Corries. Good cover across the hills above 900 metres. Fast ski touring or walking on a firm surface.

Although firm in most locations there are pockets of soft snow in sheltered locations.

Becoming slightly cloudier late morning. Light on Corrie Bhrochain, Braeriach.
