No thaw!

Wet snow sticking to the fences in the Glenshee Ski Area
Well it has stayed just cold enough to continue snowing instead of the rain we were forecast at 1000 metres. With strong winds driving it on fresh windslab is now forming in sheltered locations. Any exposed area is being scoured though with the result that you could be in an area of minimal snow and then walk into a pocket of windslab.
It is forecast to stay very windy tonight with 70 mph NW winds. The snow showers will gradually die out overnight to give a dry day on Saturday. At higher elevations tomorrow any available deposits will continue to drift in the 45mph NW winds, so windslab will be an issue in steeper sheltered locations on the aspects mentioned in the main report.
The freezing level is forecast to be at 600 metres so the old snow will be very firm, giving good conditions in the easier gullies if you can find an exit that is free of fresh snow.
