Windy Lochnagar

4th January 2007

Went up with Grampian Police Mountain Rescue Team to Lochnagar Corrie today for a training session. Winds were very entertaining. Left in no doubt the winds dominated the day after the battle over the col. Met the Balmoral Ranger just before the col who had been on his hands and knees at one point (I’m sure there’s a joke here but lets move on). Perhaps even more impressive was to see water from the Loch being lifted to above the first aid box! Not often your rained on from below! It was good visability, even blue sky with no real rain or new snow. It was just about freezing when we left.

Most of the gullies have snow on them but only Black Spout looks enjoyable! What snow is there will take a long time to shift, so hopefully we’ll get some more to build on whats there. The ground/turf is not frozen and water is running free.
It’s not all doom and gloom, it didn’t rain during the main thaw and there’s a lot more left than there should have been!

Ever the optimist!

Paul
